Since the 1960s, Gibson Energy Partnership’s Edmonton South Terminal has distributed petroleum products via pipelines, trucks and rail. In 2018, Gibson retained Ecoventure to manage regulatory approvals and monitor the facility, including the Soil Monitoring/Management Program, Groundwater Monitoring Program, spill response and approvals for expansions under EPEA. Ecoventure also conducted soil vapor monitoring, created a Conceptual Site Model and designed Remedial Action and Risk Management Plans for contaminants.

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS

supervise and execute all environmental work

107

monitoring wells

Ecoventure is the principal environmental consultant for all components of the project and is responsible for land management (completing all crossing/ proximity/road use agreements), all ground disturbance protocols, regulatory approvals, third parties, and facility compliance with the EPEA Approval. Field responsibilities include GWM, hydraulic conductivity testing, sampling of monitoring wells and surface water bodies at various locations, fisheries and waterbodies assessments and environmental monitoring during construction activities, as required under regulatory approvals.

Ecoventure manages 107 monitoring wells and nine surface water sampling locations. We also completed seep surveys, and installed additional GWM wells to fill data gaps and delineate contaminant plumes. We integrated soil and groundwater data into a 3D Conceptual Site Model (CSM), addressing an off-site MTBE plume and implementing a soil vapor investigation program. Based on the CSM and a detailed risk assessment, a Remedial Action Plan (RAP) and Risk Management Plan (RMP) were developed, combining various remediation technologies and ensuring stakeholder consultations. Ecoventure also handled regulatory approvals and monitoring for facility expansions, water treatment and wildlife assessments, providing detailed reports accepted by regulators.
